DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men’s soccer team defeated Northwestern College 6-2 this afternoon in an Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) semifinal match at Saints Field.
The Saints move on to face the University of Minnesota-Morris in the UMAC Tournament Championship match. Morris defeated Crown College today 9-1 in the other semifinal. Morris edged the Saints in last year’s championship match.
CSS got on the board 10 minutes into the match with a goal from
Toby Peter (
Jr.-Spalt, Germany/J.S. Bach), his sixth of the season.
Cody Sveiven (
Jr.-Coon Rapids, Minn.) and
Courtney Bonnick (
So.-Nottingham, England/Haywood Comprehensive) had the assists.
Jermaine Dacres (
Jr.-Nottingham, England/Comprehensive) added his fifth of the season in the 32nd minute when he struck a ball that deflected off a defender and in to make it 2-0. Sveiven and
Sam Reed (
So.-Eastbourne, England, Causeway) had the assists.
Dacres scored again in the 43rd minute with an assist from Peter to extend the lead to 3-0. That was the score at halftime as the Saints out-shot the Eagles 11-1 in the first half.
St. Scholastica kept it going in the second half as
Jim Atol (
Jr.-Duluth, Minn./East) netted his third of the season with an assist from Bonnick and Peter to make it 4-0. The assist from Peter moved him up to seventh on the Saints’ all-time scoring list with his 81st career point.
After the Eagles added their first goal, the Saints got it right back when Cody Sveiven scored his fourth on the campaign.
Andrew Ndekwe (
Jr.-Minneapolis, Minn./South) and
Dustin James (
Jr.-Superior, Wis.) had the assists.
The Saints again answered another Northwestern goal in the 88th minute when
Josh Odukomaya (
Fr.-White City, Sask./Luther College HS) got into the action and had his sixth tally of the season to make the final score 6-2 CSS. Sveiven had his third assist of the day on the goal.
Sam Reed had four saves to earn the win for St. Scholastica. Danny King had three saves in the loss for Northwestern.
The Saints improve to 16-2-3 on the season, while the Eagles end with a record of 7-13-1. The 16 wins by the Saints is the second-most in a season in program history. CSS has not lost a UMAC Tournament first round match since the 1998 season.
CSS and Morris will kickoff for the championship on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Big Cat Stadium in Morris, Minn.
