UMAC Release
ST. PAUL – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team had four members selected to the All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) first team; it was announced today by UMAC Sports Information Director Greg Johnson.
The four players selected were all seniors: #Angie Groh# (
Sr.-Andover, Minn./St. Francis), #Jen Krokum# (
Sr.-Duluth, Minn./East), #Melisa Entinger# (
Sr.-Mound, Minn./Holy Trinity), and #Cortney McKenzie# (
Sr.-Maple Grove, Minn.).
Groh was a first team selection for the second straight year and was an honorable mention choice in 2007. She leads the Saints with 37 points and a team-high 15 assists. According to the latest NCAA statistical rankings, Groh is 25th in Division III in assists per game. She is second on the team with 11 goals, including two in the UMAC Tournament, which led to her garnering tournament MVP honors. She led the conference with seven game-winning goals.
Krokum also earns first team honors for the second consecutive year. Krokum is third on the team with 10 goals and 24 points. She was seventh in the conference with 61 shots.
Entinger earns first team honors for the first time in her career. Entinger has a team-best 12 goals and is second on the team with 32 points. The 12 goals ranked her seventh in the conference.
McKenzie earns first team honors for the third time in her career. McKenzie was also a first team selection in 2006 and 2007. McKenzie was 3-for-3 on penalty kicks this season and led a defense that allowed a league-low 15 goals. At one point, the Saints had a conference shutout streak of 929 minutes and 21 seconds.
Sophomore goalkeeper #Erin Olejnicak# (
So.-Brainerd, Minn.) and freshman defender #Anna Valerius# (
Fr.-Albertville, Minn./St. Michael-Albertville) were honorable mention selections.
Olejnicak is an honorable mention selection for the second consecutive year as she led the UMAC in goals-against-average (0.50), save percentage (.875), and shutouts (7). She is 37th and 50th in Division III in GAA and save percentage respectively.
Valerius is also an honorable mention selection in her first season. Valerius had one goal on the season from her defender position and shut down opposing team's attacks.
Sarah Strobino of Northland College was named the UMAC Player of the Year, while her coach Ashley Grant was the Coach of the Year.
The Saints are not done playing this season as they are making their third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and will face Macalester College in the first round on Saturday in St. Paul.
