MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica softball team settled for a split with 21st-ranked Gustavus Adolphus this evening at Jane Sage Cowles Stadium on the campus of the University of Minnesota.

In a make-up of a doubleheader that was supposed to be played on April 5th in Duluth, the Saints won the first game 4-3 over the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular season champions. The Golden Gusties had won 23 of their last 24 games.

With Gustavus holding a 1-0 lead in the fourth, #Betsy Wehseler# (So.-Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton) had a two-run double with two outs to give the Saints a 2-1 lead. The Gusties regained the lead in the top of the sixth with two runs in the inning to make the score of 3-2. CSS responded in the bottom of the inning when #Kristin Swartz# (Jr.-Hermantown, Minn.) hit a bases loaded single to plate two and make it 4-3.

#Jenn Falk# (So.-Altona, Man.) kept that score in tact as the Saints prevailed 4-3. Falk went all seven innings and scattered eight hits to win her 13th decision of the year.

The Saints would only get one run across in the nightcap as Gustavus earned the split with a 9-1 victory. #Kayla Jenkins# (So.-Esko, Minn.) earned the loss for the Saints. The defeat snapped a 14-game winning streak for St. Scholastica. The Saints now have a record of 28-12 overall, while Gustavus is 33-5. The Saints are 3-7 all-time against the Gusties.

The Saints will take part in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Postseason Tournament, starting on Friday in Mankato. CSS will play the first game on Friday at noon against either Northwestern College or the University of Minnesota-Morris. The tournament is a four-team, double-elimination format and all of the games will be played at Caswell Park.
