MINNEAPOLIS – The St. Scholastica men’s tennis team won two doubles championships on the first day of the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The team of
Dillon Sterle (
Jr.-Hibbing, Minn.) and
Jacob Engelstad (
Fr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) did not lose a game in two matches on their way to winning a conference title at the No. 2 flight. They first defeated Martin Luther 8-0 and then took care of Bethany Lutheran in the championship 8-0.
The team of
Tim Dean (
Jr.-Rhinelander, Wis.) and
Cody Bottem (
Fr.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) also won a conference championship at the No. 3 flight. The duo took down Minnesota-Morris 8-1 in the semifinals and then defeated Martin Luther 8-2 in the championship match. Last year the Saints only won one of the three doubles flights.
In singles, all six Saints advanced to the championship matches. Dillon Sterle at the No. 1 flight won his semifinal match 6-2, 6-0. Sterle is the defending conference champion at the No. 1 flight. Jacob Engelstad at the No. 2 flight won his semifinal match 6-0, 6-0.
Brendan Anderson (
So.-Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata) advanced to the championship at the No. 3 flight, winning 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Kevin Hilpert (
Fr.-Stillwater, Minn.) advanced at the No. 4 flight 6-0, 6-3, while Tim Dean won his semifinal match at the No. 5 flight 6-4, 6-1. Finally, at the No. 6 flight
Brian Lindberg (
Fr.-Hermantown, Minn.) advanced to the championship with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph. All of the singles championships will take place tomorrow.
