DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men’s and women’s tennis teams opened the 2010 season by splitting against the University of St. Thomas Saturday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center, with the women winning 5-4 and men falling 8-1.

On the women’s side, the Saints won four of the six singles matches. Callee Conda (Jr.-Hibbing, Minn.) at the No. 2 flight won in straight sets 6-3, 6-1. Also winning in straight sets was Danni Sonnenfeld (Jr.-Harris, Minn./North Branch) at the No. 6 flight, 6-1, 6-3. Katie Motley (Sr.-Eveleth, Minn./Eveleth-Gilbert) at No. 1 singles had to go to a third-set tiebreak, but prevailed 6-1, 3-6, (10-7). Angela Shields (Sr.-Pengilly, Minn./Greenway) at No. 5 singles also was forced to a tiebreak and also came out on top 6-4, 6-7 (3-7), (10-4).

The fifth win to give the Saints the victory in the match came from the No.2 doubles team of Motley and Kelly Ross (Sr.-Buffalo, Minn.), who took care of their opponents 8-4.

The lone victor on the men’s side was Jacob Engelstad (So.-Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln) at No. 2 singles as he prevailed 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), (10-5).

Both CSS teams will be in action again tomorrow when they face another Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent in Hamline University. The women begin at 9:30 a.m.
