TUCSON, Ariz. – The St. Scholastica softball team were swept in a doubleheader by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Tuesday, dropping game one 5-1 and game two 8-6.
The Saints fall to 1-5 on the year, while the Eagles improve to 10-3.

Jr.-Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton) drove in #Sam Quenette# (
So.-Spooner, Wis.) on a RBI-double in the bottom of the third. The Eagles took the lead in the top of the fifth with two runs in the inning, including a RBI-single with two outs to put La Crosse up for good.
A pair of two-out singles in the top of the seventh gave the Eagles a 5-1 lead, which would be the final. #Darcy Roach# (
Fr.-East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart) picked up the loss for CSS, while Ashley Veroeven earned the win in relief for the Eagles.
Betsy Wehseler (Ironton, Minn./Crosby-Ironton HS) was 2-for-3 to lead the Saints offense.
In the game two, #Shannen Schmidt# (
Fr.-De Pere, Wis.) ripped an RBI-double in the top of the first to give CSS a 1-0 lead. La Crosse answered in the bottom half with a run to tie it. The Eagles then took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI-double.
The Saints had their best inning thus far in Arizona, plating five in the third. After the Eagles got the leadoff batter, CSS hit six straight singles with RBIs coming from
Shannen Schmidt (De Pere, Wis./De Pere HS), #Merryssa Tiedeman# (
So.-Zumbrota, Minn./Zumbrota-Mazeppa), and two RBIs from
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS). #Kayla Jenkins# (
Jr.-Esko, Minn.) then had a RBI-double to make the score 6-2.
The Eagles got two of those runs back in the bottom of the third with a two-run home run by Cara Salm to make it 6-4. La Crosse regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth as Katie Pietrowiak led off the inning with a home run and Katie Keyes drove in two with a single to make it 7-6. The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth to make it 8-6. The Saints had runners at the corners with one out in the seventh, but suffered back-to-back strikeouts to end the game.

Jr.-Altona, Man.) earned the loss in relief, while Veroeven earned the win again in relief. The Saints finished with 10 hits in the second game with
Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) and
Shannen Schmidt (De Pere, Wis./De Pere HS) each picking up a pair of hits and two RBIs.
The Saints will face both Lakeland College (Wis.) and Augsburg College on Wednesday. The Muskies and the Saints get underway at 2:30 p.m. and the Auggies contest will begin immediately after at approximately 4:30 p.m. Both times are Central Standard Time.
