2010 schedule features three NCAA Tournament teams from a year ago

DULUTH, Minn. – St. Scholastica head women's soccer coach Dave Reyelts has announced that former Duluth East High School players Jane Goldfarb (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) and Kallie Thomas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS), along with former Cloquet standout Haley Bassett (Cloquet, Minn./Cloquet HS) all plan on attending CSS and intend to play for the Saints in the fall.

Bassett was a forward for the Cloquet Lumberjacks. She played on three state tournament teams, including a third-place state finish her senior season. She was the team's leading scorer in her junior and senior campaigns and was selected to both the Lake Superior Conference First Team and the Duluth News Tribune All-Area team in each of her last two seasons. Her summer club team, coached by current CSS men's soccer assistant Dave Robinson, won the state title in 2007. She was also selected to play in the Kernz & Company Area Senior Classic.

Goldfarb played as a goalkeeper for the Duluth East Greyhounds. She was part of the 2007 state squad that was Section 7AA champs. Her teammate Kallie Thomas (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS) was a two-year starter at Duluth East as a defender, including team captain her senior season.

St. Scholastica's 2010 schedule will begin against a team that ended its season in 2009 as Macalester College comes to Duluth to face the Saints on September 1st. CSS will then host the Advantage Emblem Cup September 3rd-5th. The cup returns after a two-year hiatus and the Saints will open with 2009 NCAA Elite Eight participant Concordia-Moorhead on Friday, Sept. 3rd. The Saints will also play Gustavus Adolphus on Sept. 5th.

Another 2009 NCAA Tournament participant will square off against the Saints as CSS travels to Carleton College on Sept. 11th. Carleton ended the Saints' season in 2008 in the NCAA Tournament. Other non-conference matches on the schedule include Augsburg College's trip to Saints Field on October 19th and CSS's trip to the University of Wisconsin-River Falls on Oct. 26th for The Chalice.

Conference play begins on Sept. 14th at Northland College. The Saints will host Crown College on Oct. 2nd for Homecoming. The Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) postseason tournament begins on November 2nd. This year, the tournament is more important than ever as for the first time the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament will be on the line.

The Saints will have a tough hill to climb if they want to repeat as UMAC champions for a seventh time and qualify for their fourth straight NCAA Tournament. CSS lost 15 players from last year's squad, 10 of which played in 20 or more games. The Saints lost 74-percent of their scoring output from last season, including their top three scorers. They also lost their goalkeeper, who started in their last two NCAA Tournament matches. CSS's 71-match UMAC regular season unbeaten streak may be in jeopardy this season.

The three area players join Hawaii-native Malia Grosskeutz in the 2010 incoming class. Be sure to keep an eye on csssaints.com throughout the summer for the latest women's soccer information.
