BUFFALO, Minn. – The St. Scholastica women's hockey team fell to Saint Anselm College (N.H.) 3-2 in overtime on Friday night at the Buffalo Civic Center.
CSS is technically the host school in the four-team classic being played in Buffalo, Minn. this weekend. Buffalo is also the hometown of head coach #Jackie MacMillan#. The College of Saint Benedict defeated Bethel University in first matchup of the evening 3-1.
The Saints (4-8-1) got a great chance six minutes into the game when #Jordan Klimek# would get hooked on a breakaway forcing a penalty shot, the first in program history. However, Klimek's attempt was denied and the game remained scoreless.
The Hawks (8-3-0) converted three minutes later when Kristen Byrne scored off a rebound to make the score 1-0 at the first intermission.
Saint Anselm didn't take long to extend its lead in the second period when Courtney Winters scored a power-play goal one minute and 52 seconds into the period.
The Saints then got on the board with 8:20 on the clock in the second period as Jordan Klimek got another chance at a breakaway would not be denied this time, scoring her third goal of the season, unassisted.
CSS tied it early in the third period on a #Monika Waidacher# power-play goal three minutes into the period. It was Waidacher's first goal as a Saint. #Michelle Rebeck# assisted on the tally.
The Hawks would have some great chances the rest of the third period, but CSS goaltender #Rachel Borchardt# was strong denying Saint Anselm as the game went to overtime.
The Saints would be called for a penalty one minute and 28 seconds into the overtime period. The penalty proved costly as the Hawks scored 25 seconds later on a Kathryn Picallo power-play goal to make the final 3-2.
The Hawks doubled-up the Saints in shot 34-17. Borchardt had 31 saves in the loss for the Saints, while Amy Zappen had 15 saves to earn the win for Saint Anselm. Both teams combined for 13 penalties.
The Saints will finish up in Buffalo tomorrow when they face Bethel University at the Civic Center. The puck is scheduled to drop at 8 p.m.
