Late Goal Gives Yellowjackets the Edge over Saints in a Thriller

The Saints men's soccer team fell just short to the UW-Superior Yellowjackets 1-0 in double overtime at a rain soaked Public Schools Stadium (PSS) on Wednesday night.

The tough loss to the Yellowjackets (9-4-0) is reminiscent of the last time the Saints played under the lights in rainy conditions.  CSS fell to Augsburg in the NCAA Tournament first round game on a rainy night under the lights then as well.

The game began with an early opportunity for UWS, coming on a corner kick just after the start of the game.  From that point on, the Saints controlled the ball for much of the first half.  Neither side had many scoring opportunities in the first half, as the rain made for a little more sloppy play.  The score went into halftime tied at zero.

The second half proved to be an exciting one.  CSS appeared to have control for a lot of the half, but both sides had multiple scoring opportunities.  Those opportunities came away empty as both Sam Reed (Eastbourne, England/Causeway School) and Matt Elder made spectacular saves to keep both teams scoreless.  The second half was also an aggressive one as three yellow cards were handed to the 'Jackets.

The first overtime period was another hard fought one for these two teams.  Many opportunities, including a few free kicks near the goal, came up empty for both teams, and they would head into double overtime.

Throughout the second overtime, it looked as though CSS and UWS would leave this border battle with a scoreless tie.  But in the 107th minute of play, Ben Kasper drilled a rebound shot into the back of the net off of a save by Reed to give the Yellowjackets the golden goal and the victory.

The Saints (9-3-1, 6-0-1 UMAC) will see the field again this weekend when they take on the North Central Rams (2-8-2) at Saints Field at 2 p.m. for CSS Homecoming.
