PREVIEW: Schedule Change for First Home Baseball Games

DULUTH, Minn. – The ninth-ranked St. Scholastica baseball team will be at home for the first time all year and will now play Presentation College in a doubleheader on Thursday, starting at 4 p.m. and a single-game Friday, starting at noon at Wade Stadium.

Thursday vs. Presentation (DH) @ 4 p.m.
Friday vs. Presentation @ 10 a.m.
Monday vs. St. Thomas @ 1 p.m.

The Saints swept Martin Luther this past weekend in three games outscoring the Knights by a combined score of 34-5.

#9 St. Scholastica Saints (19-4, 10-1 UMAC)
The Saints winning ways have proved dividends as they have now moved into the top 10 in the D3baseball.com poll to ninth overall … According to the latest NCAA Division III statistical rankings, the Saints are ranked fifth in the nation in scoring with 9.5 runs per game … Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS), Kyle Moody (Maple Grove, Minn./Osseo HS ) and Brian Marshik (Arden Hills, Minn./Mounds View HS ), have all reached base in every game they have played this season … Moody leads the team in batting .466 and has drove in 29 runs for the team lead in that category as well … As a team the Saints have tripled their opponents scoring on the year at 198-63 … Joe Link (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury HS) is a perfect 30-30 on stolen base attempts this year and is ranked second in Division III with 1.36 per game, the leader is at 1.38 per game … The 30 stolen bases are tied for fourth-most in a season by a Saint and he just needs 10 more to tie the record held by Greg Young during the 2001 season … Link also leads the conference with 33 runs scored … Matt Lewis (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and David Vogelgesang (Hastings, Minn./Hastings HS) are both 5-0 this season on the mound … Jake Nystrom (Fargo, N.D./Fargo North HS) leads the team in ERA at .90 and has three saves on the year … As a team the Saints pitching corps has an earned run average of 2.45 and are ranked seventh in the country in that category, while their opponents have an ERA of 8.95.

Presentation Saints (11-12, 6-4 UMAC)
The other Saints have won four in a row after a sluggish start to the year, which has seen them on two losing streaks of five games so far this year … PC is led by Justin Kline with a batting average of .400 … Kline leads the UMAC with 13 doubles on the year as well as on base percentage at .543 … He is ranked 16th in nation in doubles per game and 26th in on-base percentage … Spencer Sudbeck has the lead in RBIs with 26 which is tied for second in the UMAC … The pitching staff for the Saints is led by the aforementioned Sudbeck and Dustin Pickerel … Sudbeck is 2-1 on the year with Pickerel at 4-2 … Both pitchers have over 28 innings on the mound so far this year … However, no pitcher on the Saints has an ERA under 4.45 and as a team they are giving up 8.18 runs per game.

Last Meeting: (CSS All-Time Record vs. PC: 20-1-0)
CSS won the battle of the Saints in the elimination game of the UMAC tournament last year 6-5. Chad Peterson (New Brighton, Minn./St. Anthony Village HS) had a two-run triple. Presentation was held hitless through five innings by David Barningham (Bayfield, Wis./Washburn HS) who went 7.1 innings pitched and allowed just four hits.

St. Thomas Tommies (13-13, 6-4 MIAC)

A powerhouse in D3 over the past few years is in a slump as they are fighting to stay at .500 on the year … The Tommies have won their last five and eight of the past 11 to get to 13-13 on the year, including an 8-3 victory Division I University of Minnesota … The Tommies also swept UMAC rival Bethany Lutheran College on Monday … Charles Bruchu is one of four players to start every game for the Tommies and leads the team in batting average and RBIs at .404 and 21 respectively … Bryce Gapinski is 3-1 on the year in five starts with an ERA of 3.08 … Kris Edwards has made 10 appearances and pitched 36.2 innings and has 32 strikeouts on the year … The Tommies pitching staff is giving up 4.64 earned runs per game while their opponents are at 5.63.

Last Meeting:
(CSS All-Time Record vs. St. Thomas: 12-19)
In the season opener earlier this year, the Saints took the game 10-6 when the Tommies were ranked No. 10 in the nation. Lewis earned the victory as Brandon Peterson (Burnsville, Minn./Apple Valley HS) had two doubles and drove in five to lead the Saints.
