INDIANAPOLIS – Former St. Scholastica track & field athlete
Tony Evans (New Richmond, Wis./New Richmond HS) is the recipient of the Divisional Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award; it was announced today by the NCAA.
The NCAA Sportsmanship Awards honor student-athletes and a coach, administrator or athletics staff member who, through their actions in the competitive arena of intercollegiate athletics, have demonstrated one or more of the ideals of sportsmanship, including fairness, civility, honesty, unselfishness, respect and responsibility. Annual selections are made by the NCAA Committee on Sportsmanship and Ethical Conduct for the Bob Frederick Award, the National Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award and the Divisional Student-Athlete Sportsmanship Award.
Evans received the award due to his and his throwing coach
Todd Bouchie's actions at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Outdoor Track & Field Championships in May.
Both Evans and Bouchie offered a competitor use of their heavier equipment to improve the distance on his javelin throw. The both knew the offer would likely cost Evans the championship, but they were excited to see if the competitor could better his conference record.
In the finals, using St. Scholastica's javelin, the competitor not only set a new conference record, he also met the Division III provisional mark for the NCAA Championships. Evans, who finished second, cheered on his competitor during the meet, congratulated him on his accomplishment and allowed him to use his javelin for future meets to improve his provisional standing.
Even though Evans' track & field career is over, he will still be around CSS Athletics as he will be a student manager for the women's soccer team this season. Evans hopes to be a track & field coach in the future.
