Box Score DULUTH, Minn. (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica volleyball team was looking for a repeat of the 2009 season when it went down to Northwestern College as the No. 2 seed and defeated the Eagles in five sets, but it wasn't meant to be falling in straight sets Saturday Night at the Ericksen Center.
The Saints took an early lead in the opening set up 4-1 and the set continued to be close at 12-12 halfway through. However, the Eagles went on a 9-3 run to take control and took the first set 25-18.
The Eagles carried that momentum into the second set, scoring the first five points of the set leading 11-3 at one point. Northwestern took the second set 25-14. Unfortunately, the third set would be no different as the Eagles used a 7-0 run and take the set and match convincingly 25-12.
Anna Zyvoloski (Sauk Rapids, Minn./St. Cloud Cathedral HS (Minn.-Duluth)) finishes her stellar collegiate career with a team-high 11 kills. In her three years in a Saints uniform, Zyvoloski had 1,445 kills and 1,668.5 total points. She will leave with the most kills per set (4.18) and points per set (4.82) in program history. Other seniors departing for the Saints include
Taylor Tyllia (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS),
Jenny Kienzle (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) and
Brittany Oakman (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS).
Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) added five kills and
Jess Hanowski (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led the team with 14 set assists for CSS. Kienzle and Zyvoloski each had eight digs to lead the team. Kendra Korporal led the Eagles with 15 kills.
Northwestern (26-8) moves on to its third consecutive NCAA Division III Tournament appearance as recipient of the conference's automatic qualifier. The Saints will finish with a record of 17-13 after making their first NCAA Tournament appearance a year ago.
