DULUTH, Minn. – The St. Scholastica men's tennis team begin its 2012 season with a 7-2 victory over Concordia College-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon in the Burns Wellness Fieldhouse.
The Saints got off to a good start in the dual match by sweeping all three doubles matches. The No. 1 team of
Jacob Engelstad (Thief River Falls, Minn./Lincoln HS) and
Brian Lindberg (Hermantown, Minn./Hermantown HS) won 8-4. The freshmen tandem at the No. 2 spot,
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) and
Tyler Bates (St. Cloud, Minn./St. Cloud Tech), won 8-6 and the No. 3 team of
Kevin Hilpert (Stillwater, Minn./Stillwater HS) and
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won 8-4. Last season, the Saints set a program record with 57 doubles wins on the year.
In singles action, Engelstad cruised in the first set and the rallied to close the match in straight sets at the No. 1 position 6-1, 7-6 (7-1). Mack was also victories at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-0 triumph.
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) pulled out a win in a super-breaker at the No. 5 spot by scores of 6-2, 3-6, (10-8). The final winner on the day was
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) at No. 6 singles with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
The Saints will be in action next on Sunday, February 12th when it hosts Saint John's University at the Arrowhead Tennis Center. Action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
