Danica Schellbach (Rush City, Minn./Rush City HS) and
Erin Frase (Phillips, Wis./Phillips HS (UW-River Falls)) combined to score 44 points as the St. Scholastica women's basketball team defeated Martin Luther College 76-67 Saturday night to win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship and receive the conference's automatic qualifier into next weekend's NCAA Division III Tournament.
Much like in Wednesday's upset win over top-seeded Minnesota Morris, the Saints came out hot, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Schellbach scored eight of the 10 points for CSS. A little later, the Knights went on a 7-0 run to tie the game at 12-12 with 12 minutes to go in the half. The Saints answered with six straight points, four of which from Frase.
St. Scholastica maintained the lead until the final two minutes of the half when Martin Luther scored six straight points to take its first lead of the game at 28-27.
Holly Peterson (Mantorville, Minn./Kasson-Mantorville HS) then drained a 3-pointer to put the Saints back up as the teams went into the locker room with the score 30-28 CSS.
The Saints shot just 32 percent from the floor in the first half, but were 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Martin Luther shot 38 percent from the field in the half and was 3-for-8 from the charity stripe. CSS also had 12 turnovers, which led to 14 MLC points.
The Knights (12-15) tied the game early in the second half, but the Saints scored seven quick points with Schellbach scoring five to go up 37-30. MLC quickly got it back to one, but then the Saints went on a big 12-2 run to make the score 49-38.
CSS led by as many as 15 with over eight minutes remaining, before the Knights would try to make one more push. Martin Luther got it down to five with 46 seconds remaining, but that is as close as it got as the Saints prevailed by a final score of 76-67.
The UMAC Tournament title is the second in program history with the first coming in 2002.
CSS shot much better in the second half at a 59 percent rate to finish at 43 percent for the game. The Saints were also outstanding at the free throw line going 18-for-23. Martin Luther shot 34 percent in the second half to finish at 36 percent for the game. CSS's 23 turnovers kept the Knights in the game as they scored 34 points off of those turnovers. The Saints out-rebounded the Knights 52-32.
Schellbach finished with 24 points and added a season-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Schellbach also had a team-high six assists. Frase added 20 points and
Mariah Hovick (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) chipped in with 13 points. Frase was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Alex Anthon had a game-high 26 points to pace the Knights.
The Saints (13-14) will find out who and where they will play in their first-ever NCAA Division III Tournament game on Monday. The selection show will be aired on NCAA.com at 1:30 p.m. local time.
