FRIDLEY, Minn. (csssaints.com) – In a dual match that saw four of the nine matches decided by tiebreakers, the St. Scholastica men's tennis team defeated conference-foe Northwestern College 6-3 on Thursday afternoon at the Lifetime Fitness Tennis Center.

With this men's and women's tennis matchup featured at the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Game of the Week, the men's side of the equation did not disappoint.

The Eagles (4-8, 1-1 UMAC) would get their three wins at the top of the lineup, winning at both No. 1 singles and No. 2 singles in third set super-breakers. Northwestern also won at No. 1 doubles 8-4.

However, the Saints' depth proved to be too much for the Eagles. The No. 2 doubles team of Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) and Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won in a tiebreaker 9-8 (7-0). Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) and Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) at No. 3 doubles won 8-3.

In singles action, Lambrecht won at the No. 3 spot 6-4, 6-1. Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) came out on top 6-3, 6-3 at No. 4. Dean was also forced to a third set super-breaker at the No. 5 spot and won 3-6, 7-5, (10-1). The last singles winner for CSS was Kelly at the No. 6 spot by scores of 6-1, 6-0.

The Saints (10-6, 2-0 UMAC) will be in action next Friday when they split the squad up with one team facing the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire in a non-conference match in Eau Claire and the other Bethany Lutheran College in UMAC play in Mankato.
