Softball Sweeps Morris in Game of the Week

(csssaints.com) – Rendi Johnson (Bonney Lake, Wash./Bonney Lake HS) hit three home runs on the night, including a grand slam and also earned the win in game two as the St. Scholastica softball team swept the University of Minnesota Morris late Saturday night/early Sunday morning at the Vadnais Heights Sports Center.

The CSS-Morris doubleheader was the UMAC Game of the Week this week as the Cougars came into the contest tied for the first in the league with Bethany Lutheran College and the Saints sitting just a game back.

Game one saw the Saints hit two grand slam home runs in the second inning on its way to a 14-2 victory in five innings. Johnson smacked one grand slam, while Tiff Hudack (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS) had the other as the Saints plated 11 runs in the inning.

Johnson also homered in the third inning as she finished 3-for-3 with six RBIs in the game one victory. Sydney Gordon (International Falls, Minn./Falls HS) was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Hudack, Micah McGuiness (Forest Lake, Minn./Forest Lake HS) and Kasandra McCabe (St. Peter, Minn./St. Peter HS) all had two hits in the win.

Darcy Roach (East Grand Forks, Minn./Sacred Heart HS) struck out six and allowed four hits in five innings to earn the win.

Johnson then took the rubber in game two and struck out five and scattered four hits to earn the complete-game victory as the Saints swept the Cougars 4-1.

Johnson hit a solo home run, her third of the night, in the bottom of the first to give the Saints a 1-0 lead. An RBI double by McCabe in the third extended the CSS lead to 2-0. McGuiness had a pair of RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings to complete the scoring for the Saints. McGuiness finished 3-for-4 in the game two victory.

The Saints (15-10, 8-2 UMAC) are scheduled to have a split doubleheader on Tuesday at Northwestern College. CSS will face North Central University at 1 p.m. and Northwestern at 5 p.m. Check csssaints.com for schedule changes.
