LA CROSSE, Wis. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica freshman
Kevin Wagner (Cleveland, Minn./Cleveland HS) entered day two of the decathlon in eighth place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & Field Championships and after all events were completed on Friday, he would finish ninth, missing All-American honors by 17 points.
Wagner began the second day with an 11th place finish in the 110m hurdles with a time of 16.36. He followed with an eighth place finish in the discus throw with a personal-best toss of 111'3” (33.90m). He then got back into eighth place overall after the pole vault clearing a personal-best height of 12'11.5” (3.95m) to place fifth overall in that event.
However, Wagner slipped to 10th after the ninth event, the javelin throw, with a distance of 139'9” (42.60m). He finished 13th in the event.
That left one event, the 1,500m run, to conclude the decathlon. He would run another personal-best time, his sixth PR of the decathlon, and finish 10th at 4:42.71.
Unfortunately it wouldn't be enough as he finished ninth overall in the decathlon with a program-record total of 6,454 points. The top eight competitors earn All-American accolades. He beat his previous program record by 122 points.
Wagner finishes as the second-best freshman in the field with the eighth-place finisher 17 points ahead of him the top freshman.
Becky Huberty will compete tomorrow in the shot put beginning at 1 p.m. and Rachel Miller will wrap up competition for the Saints at 3:20 p.m. as she competes in the triple jump.
