MINNEAPOLIS (csssaints.com) – For the second consecutive year and the 13th time overall, the St. Scholastica men's tennis team won the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament championship after beating Northwestern College 7-2 on Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center.
The Saints (20-8) swept the Eagles (13-11) in the regular season finale last Saturday at the Arrowhead Tennis Center, but things would be tighter today.
CSS took two of the three doubles matches, losing at the No. 1 spot, but winning at Nos. 2 & 3. The No. 2 tandem of
James Mack (Portsmouth, England/Cams Hill School) and
Nick Lambrecht (Stacy, Minn./North Branch HS (Minn.-Duluth)) won 8-4. The No. 3 team of
Dylan Kelly (Minneapolis, Minn./Minneapolis South HS) and
Kolin Dean (Rhinelander, Wis./Rhinelander HS) won 8-6.
In singles play, three of the six matches would be decided by third set super-breakers. The Saints would win two of those matches. Lambrecht won one at the No. 3 spot 6-2, 2-6, (10-2).
Cullen Combs (White Bear Lake, Minn./White Bear Lake HS) won the other at No. 5 rallying to win 3-6, 7-6 (9-7), (10-5). Lambrecht's victory was his 19th of the season, setting a new CSS men's tennis record.
Mack came out on top at the No. 2 spot 6-4, 6-3.
Mike Fontana (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS (Gustavus Adolphus)) was victorious at the No. 4 position 6-2, 6-2 for his 12th straight victory and 18th of the season. The final winner was
Guthrie Coughlin (Staples, Minn./Staples-Motley HS) at No. 6 by scores of 6-1, 6-1 for his ninth straight win.
The Saints set a program record with 20 victories this season and won a program-best 123 singles matches and 58 doubles matches. The .707 singles winning percentage is also a program record.
