All-UMAC Women's Tennis Teams
ST. PAUL (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's tennis team had a league-high five players named All-Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) and head coach
Wells Patten was named the Coach of the Year; it was announced on Tuesday.
Hillary Bungarden (Hibbing, Minn./Hibbing HS),
Alexis Gunderson (Virginia, Minn./Virginia HS),
Kelli Johnson (Mankato, Minn./Mankato West HS),
Megan Lawrence (Park Rapids, Minn./Park Rapids HS) and
Rachael Zwiener (St. Cloud, Minn./Home School) all earned All-UMAC accolades. However, for the first time since the 2003 season, the Saints did not have the UMAC Player of the Year. That honor went this year to Megan Johnson of Northwestern College.
Bungarden, the 2012 UMAC Player of the Year, is named to the all-conference team for the third straight year. Bungarden played all of her matches at No. 1 singles and doubles. She went 16-6 in singles and 14-7 in doubles play. In conference action she was 4-2 in singles and 5-1 in doubles. With a year remaining, Bungarden is fourth all-time in career singles wins (53), just eight shy of tying the program record.
Gunderson earns all-conference laurels for the second consecutive year. She went 15-6 at No. 3 singles this past season, including 5-1 in UMAC play. She won her final seven singles matches of the season. Gunderson also went 13-7 at No. 1 doubles.
Johnson is named all-conference for the first time in her career. She was 10-5 in singles, including 4-1 in conference action. She also was 12-5 in doubles, including 5-0 in league play.
Lawrence earns All-UMAC honors for the second straight year. She led the team with 20 singles wins, becoming just the seventh CSS player to hit the 20-win plateau. Lawrence was 9-0 in league matches. At one point during the season, Lawrence won 13 straight singles matches. She also tied for a team-high with 15 doubles victories, including winning her final 14 matches. She finishes with the best singles winning percentage in program history (.842) and is tied with the seventh-most singles wins in program history (48).
Zwiener also earns all-conference accolades for the second straight year. Zwiener finished second on the team with 19 singles wins, including 6-0 in league-play. She finished the season winning her final 11 consecutive matches. Zwiener also tied for a team-high with 15 doubles victories.
Head coach
Wells Patten guided the Saints to their 17th consecutive UMAC regular season and tournament championship. This is the 10th time he has been named the conference's coach of the year.
