DULUTH, Minn. (
csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica women's soccer team was pushed to a penalty-kick shootout by the University of Minnesota Morris in the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) Tournament semifinals on Wednesday at Saints Field and the Cougars prevailed in the final round of kicks by a 3-2 margin to end the Saints' season.
Regulation
The Saints kept the pressure on the Cougars right from the start. CSS had six corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the game.
Hannah Zeis (Ashland, Wis./Ashland HS ) had a great chance early on getting behind the defense and tried to flick one past the keeper, but Morris' Torri Jordan got a hand on it to deflect it wide. The Saints out-shot Morris 12-1 in the first half and had 11 corner kicks to Morris' two. St. Scholastica finished with 22 corner kicks for the game a new single-game program record.
The second half was much of the same as the Saints had 19 shots, while Morris did not have a single attempt. The Saints did not have many quality scoring chances in the second half despite the 19 shots and after 90 minutes the game remained scoreless.
Goal Waved Off in OT
St. Scholastica had three consecutive corner kicks five minutes into the first overtime session. On the first attempt, Zeis' shot went just wide. On the second attempt,
Kirsten Olsen (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS )'s header was tipped over the crossbar by the goalkeeper Jordan. On the third attempt, Jordan attempted to punch it out, but it deflected into the net for an apparent St. Scholastica game-winner. However, a foul was called on the Saints and the goal was waved off.
In the second overtime, Minnesota Morris recorded its first shot on goal in the game in the first four minutes, but neither team had many chances and the game would be decided by way of penalty shootout.
Shootout
Five shooters for each team would decide who advances to Saturday's championship game. The Saints went first and
Kirsten Olsen (Ham Lake, Minn./Blaine HS ) buried her attempt. Morris would also convert after the first round. Both teams missed in round two, with the Saints hitting the post and
Roni Rudolph (Duluth, Minn./Duluth East HS (Minnesota-Duluth) ) stopping the Cougars attempt.
In the third round, CSS' attempt went over the crossbar, while Morris' deflected into the goal off the inside of the left post to give the Cougars a 2-1 advantage. In the fourth round,
Peyton Bacso (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS (Minnesota-Duluth) ) tied it at two, converting her attempt, while Morris' attempt went wide and high of the target.
Heading into the fifth-and-final round, the Saints once again were off target opening the door for Morris. The Cougars took advantage as Yu Ito buried it into the net to advance Minnesota Morris into the championship game.
Another Scoreless Game
Even though Minnesota Morris advanced to Saturday's championship game, the contest officially goes down as a scoreless draw. That is the fourth scoreless draw of the season for the Saints, which is a program record. The NCAA Division III record is five held by Ithaca College during the 1989 season.
Thank You Seniors
The Saints will say goodbye to six seniors, who won three UMAC regular season and tournament championships and made three NCAA Division III Tournament appearances. Those seniors are
Peyton Bacso (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS (Minnesota-Duluth) ),
Alex Miller (Brooklyn Park, Minn./Totino Grace HS ),
