Women's Basketball Rally Falls Short Against the Auggies

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (csssaints.com) - The St. Scholastica women's basketball team rallied late, but were unable to overcome Augsburg University, falling by a score of 70-63 at Si Melby Hall on Tuesday night.
 
First Half
CSS started the half well, earning a four-point lead through Emelia Miner (Hutchinson, Minn./Hutchinson HS)'s two free throws and a layup by Sam Brannen (Ramsey, Minn./Anoka HS). Augsburg responded three minutes in, taking the lead after going on a five-point run.
 
Augsburg would lead for the rest of the quarter, with a score of 16-11.
 
Shortly after the restart the Saints would quickly come within two points of the Auggies thanks to a free throw by Rashonna Thomas (Minneapolis, Minn./Columbia Heights HS (Anoka-Ramsey CC)) and a layup by Holly VanKempen (Elbow Lake, Minn./West Central HS).
 
The Saints would take the lead for the first time since early in the first half after Miner made two free-throws to make the score 22-21. But Augsburg quickly regained the lead after a 3-pointer by Aiza Wilson.
 
CSS made it a one point game after a three-pointer by Kaylee Kennedy (Littlefork, Minn./Littlefork-Big Falls HS), and the half ended at 28-27 in favor of Augsburg.
 
Second Half
After an even first half, Augsburg started to pull away from the Saints in the second half, outscoring CSS 21-10 in the third quarter. With four minutes remaining in the game, the Auggies had a 16 point-lead.
 
But the Saints started to rally after a layup by Mariah Pearson (Blaine, Minn./Blaine HS) spurred an 11-point run to narrow the deficit to five points.
 
Augsburg responded through Tamirah McLemore's two free-throws, before Michala Walther (Roseville, Minn./Concordia Academy) made a layup for the Saints to once again make it a five point-game. But Camryn Speerse put up two free throws for Augsburg with 22 seconds remaining for a final score of 70-63.
 
Notable Performances for the Saints
Three Saints put up double figures, Thomas and Vankempen both had 14 points, while Walther had 11. Walther posted a double-double with a team-high 10 rebounds and also led the Saints in steals with four.
 
Notable Performances for the Opponent
McLemore led the Auggies in points and steals, with 13 points and five steals. Camryn Speese put up 12 points, and K'Aezha Wubben and Wilson both had 11. 

Up Next
The Saints (1-1) will make the trek to Colorado Springs where it will take part in the Colorado College Rocky Mountain Thanksgiving Classic on Friday and Saturday. CSS will open with Colorado College on Friday at 5:30 p.m. Mountain Time (6:30 p.m. local).
