The College of St. Scholastica's Sports Medicine Department's philosophy is to provide the highest quality medical care available to our patients. Our patients are defined as the NCAA sponsored student-athletes at The College of St. Scholastica. We endeavor to become leaders in healthcare and the athletic training profession at the NCAA Division III level. The Sports Medicine Department promotes continual professional growth and development both at an individual and organizational level in order to provide the best care possible. In conjunction with the mission & vision statements of The College of St. Scholastica, our philosophy will be achieved by:

• Providing a safe and inclusive environment that reflects on the philosophical excellence of The College of St. Scholastica and the Benedictine Values of respect, hospitality, community, love of learning, and stewardship.
• Providing a patient-centered approach that accounts for both physical and mental health while considering the patient's needs, goals, and beliefs ensuring compassionate care for all patients.
• Providing independent medical care in which the patient's well-being is established as the top priority for the Sports Medicine Department without external pressures or influences from non-medical factors.
• Utilizing evidence-based practice derived from current research evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences.
• Creating policy and procedures to best serve patients under the direction of supervising physicians and in accordance with rules and guidelines set forth by the National Athletic Trainers' Association, Board of Certification, Minnesota Board of Medical Practice, and the NCAA Sports Medicine Handbook
• Providing essential clinical education to graduate athletic training students that includes appropriate supervision, evaluation of knowledge and skill proficiency, and delivering constructive feedback.

Athletic training is a specialty in the field of sports medicine. Certified Athletic Trainers collaborate with other medical professionals to provide high quality care to their patients. An Athletic Trainer is a skilled and credentialed medical professional that provide services pertaining to:

1. Injury and Illness Prevention and Wellness Promotion
2. Examination, Assessment, and Diagnosis
3. Immediate and Emergency Care
4. Therapeutic Interventions
5. Healthcare Administration and Professional Responsibility 

In an effort to live out the Benedictine Values and promote the athletic training profession, the Sports Medicine Department is involved in providing clinical education to Health Sciences students in order to prepare and develop young professionals entering the field.
